When we speak about self defense, first understand that you have both a right and responsibility to protect yourself from an unlawful attack. I stress unlawful attack meaning, you have tried everything you can to avoid the incident, to avoid the fight, you've tried your best to talk your way out of it and somehow despite your best attempts to walk away from trouble; you are attacked anyway!
If you have certain mental block which impedes your commitment to effectively defend yourself, then this must be addressed before the attack. Understand that no-one has the right to wrongfully threaten or injure another person and if someone attempts to do so to you, that attempt needs to be stopped following the correct use of force.
One of the benefits of self defense training and martial arts training is that the training can change your mindset, and over the time instill mental toughness. As an individual you must be able to stand up for yourself because no one else will do it for you.
With regards to self defense, keep in mind that it is not an MMA match; be prepared to do what you need to do to escape safely. Your greatest opponent is within you...once you overcome your worries, doubts and fears you will be surprised how much of a better survivor and fighter you can become.
